Elkwood Ave #B,Imperial Beach, CA 91932 This page is provided as a means of keeping Nado Don's clients informed of the latest developments on our Web Site & provide a little non-techno nerd oriented computer advice gleaned from working at the bottom end of the food chain in the world according to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs i.e. "common sense". NADO DON'S NEW DEVELOPMENTS COMPUTER SCAMS In the last 1-2 years, there has been an ongoing
telephone/computer scam in the Coronado area that hasn't been widely publicized.
Residents are getting calls at home from person(s) with SW Asian/Indian accents
claiming they represent the Microsoft Technical Center. They go onto explain that
either there is a dangerous virus in your area or that your computer has damaged/corrupted
files on it. They then state that they can help detect & remove the issue by remotely
controlling your computer to conduct a diagnostic & repair actions. When they
have finished doing the voodoo they claim will remove the issue(s), they charge $200+ to
your credit card. In the end, there was no virus and while there might have been
some bad files on your CPU, routine computer maintenance would have corrected the issue
without their intervention. 1. Neither Microsoft nor any other computer/software company will EVER call you in this manner 2. No individual calling on the phone knows anything about your computers status as they have no internet access to it. So how would they ever know whether you have a virus or corrupted files? The fact that they want to take remote control should tell you they don't know what is on your computer. 3. Allowing a complete stranger to take remote control of your computer is inherently dangerous as they then have access to your vital personal or financial information and can plant viruses or worse password loggers/Trojans to steal your userids and passwords for websites. 4. The phone numbers they use to contact people are gleaned from identity theives. They scavenge land fills and collect old membership directories, phone books etc and sell the information to people like these scammers. It was fairly obvious one day when 3 members of the same yacht club received calls within 1 hour of each other. Just as with you should erase any computer data didposing of a CPU, all vital paper records must be safely destroyed. Documents with sensitive information like membership directories should be shredded before disposal. |
